Kids Climbing Frames in Ireland

Written by Gary McGeown, founder of Trampolines Ireland · Checked October 2026

The right climbing frame depends on how old your children are today and how old they will be in five years. This guide matches the BERG PlayBase and its accessories to each age, so you buy one frame and keep changing what hangs from it.

    Toddlers: swings first

For the smallest children, a climbing frame is really a swing frame. The PlayBase baby seat can be used from 9 months, with an adult pushing, and holds up to 30kg. It costs €79 and clips onto any frame.

The frames themselves are rated for users aged 3 and up. So for a toddler, think of the first year or two as swing time, with the climbing to come. Once your child turns 3, a standard swing seat (€39) can replace the baby seat.

Ages 3 to 6: swing, slide and first climbs

This is when a climbing frame earns its place in the garden. Children aged 3 to 6 want to swing, slide and climb, often all within ten minutes.

    • Swing seat (€39, 3+) — the everyday favourite.
    • Nest swing (€129, 3+, up to 150kg) — room for a child and a parent, or two friends.
    • Platform + Slide (€399, 3+) — fits the Medium, Large and Extra Large, not the Wall.
    • Climbing wall (€399, 3+) — a first taste of climbing with good hand and foot holds.

If you want two swings and a slide at once, the PlayBase Large has 3 swing spots and is the only frame that takes the hammock. See all swing set options.

Ages 6 to 10: climbing and hanging

By 6, most children want a challenge. They climb higher, hang upside down and invent their own games. This is where the end frames and the climbing accessories come in.

    • Ladders — the ladder end frames on the Medium and Large give monkey-bar style climbing. The LL version has a ladder at both ends.
    • Climbing net — sized M, L or XL to match the Medium, Large and Extra Large (€219 to €399).
    • Gym rings (€42) and trapeze (€29) — for swinging, hanging and tricks.

10+ and teens: the frame becomes a garden gym

Older children often lose interest in a wooden play tower. A PlayBase changes with them. Swap the swings for fitness accessories and it becomes an outdoor gym for teenagers and adults.

    • Pull-up bar (€99) and dip bar (€99)
    • Boxing bag (€129)
    • Fitness rope (€49)

The fitness accessories are rated to 100kg and are for ages 14 and over. More in PlayBase for adults.

Safety: what Irish parents ask about

    • 400kg maximum frame load on every PlayBase frame, with a separate user weight for each accessory.
    • Ground anchors, no concrete. The free-standing frames are held by ground anchors; the Wall frame fixes to a solid wall. See installation.
    • Clear space. Keep the area around the frame free: Wall 4m × 3m, Medium 6m × 4m, Large 7m × 5m, Extra Large 8.5m × 6m.
    • Minimum ages. Frame 3+, baby seat from 9 months with an adult, fitness accessories 14+.
    • Adult supervision for younger children, always.

Galvanised, powder-coated steel means no splinters and no rotting timber to check each spring. Read how it compares in PlayBase vs wooden climbing frames and why families choose metal climbing frames.

One frame from toddler to teen

Most climbing frames are bought for one age and outgrown by the next. The PlayBase is built the other way round. The frame is 2.45m high, 1m deep, in black or green, with a 10-year frame warranty (13 years when registered with BERG). Only the accessories change.

That makes the choice of frame mostly about garden size and how many children will swing at once: Wall 1–2 swing spots, Medium 2, Large 3, Extra Large 4. Short on space? See climbing frames for small gardens, or our buying guide.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age for a climbing frame?

The BERG PlayBase frames are rated for users aged 3 and up, which is when most children get real use from swings, the nest swing, the slide and the climbing wall. The baby seat can be used from 9 months with an adult pushing, and the fitness accessories are for ages 14 and over, so a frame bought at 3 can stay in use into the teenage years.

Is a PlayBase safe for toddlers?

The frame is rated for ages 3+. For younger children the baby seat (from 9 months, up to 30kg) is used with an adult pushing. Every frame takes a maximum load of 400kg, free-standing frames are held by ground anchors, and younger children should always be supervised.

How much space does a kids climbing frame need?

    Clear space needed: Wall 4m × 3m in front of the wall, Medium 6m × 4m, Large 7m × 5m and Extra Large 8.5m × 6m. Every frame is 2.45m high and 1m deep.

Can the climbing frame grow with my child?

Yes. The frame stays the same and the accessories change: a baby seat and swings first, then the climbing wall, climbing net, gym rings and trapeze, and from 14 the pull-up bar, dip bar, boxing bag and fitness rope. Accessories can be bought at any time.
