Heavy-Duty Outdoor Play Equipment

Written by Gary McGeown, founder of Trampolines Ireland · Checked October 2026

Lots of garden play equipment is built for small children and quietly retired by the time they hit ten. If you have bigger kids, teenagers, or adults who want to use the frame too, you need something sturdier. The BERG PlayBase is a steel frame with a 400kg maximum load, built to last from first swings to garden workouts.

    400kg maximum frame load

Every PlayBase frame — Wall, Medium, Large and Extra Large — has a maximum load of 400kg in total. The frame size changes how many accessories you can hang at once, not how much the frame can carry.

That headline figure is the total for the whole frame. Each accessory then has its own maximum user weight, and that is the limit to follow for each person using it. All figures are in our weight limits guide.

    Galvanised, powder-coated steel

The frame is galvanised, powder-coated steel, so there is no timber to rot, crack or splinter after years of Irish weather. It carries a 10-year frame warranty, rising to 13 years when you register it with BERG. Read why families choose metal climbing frames.

    Ground anchors, no concrete

The free-standing Medium, Large and Extra Large are held by ground anchors, with no concrete needed. The PlayBase Wall fixes to a solid wall, such as the wall of your house or garage. It is not designed for fences or timber panels. See installation, or call 01 960 1641 if you are unsure about your wall.

Fitness accessories for teens and adults

Swap the swings for fitness kit and the PlayBase becomes an outdoor gym. Each fitness accessory is rated to 100kg and is for users aged 14 and over.

Every accessory has its own limit

A heavy-duty frame does not make every accessory heavy-duty. The baby seat is rated to 30kg, the Platform + Slide to 70kg, swing seats, trapeze and gym rings to 80kg, and the basketball hoop's 50kg rating is a load limit on the hoop, not for hanging from the rim. The nest swing is the highest at 150kg. Always follow the limit for the accessory being used — see the accessory compatibility chart.

Extra Large for the most capacity

BERG PlayBase Extra Large climbing frame

All four frames share the same 400kg maximum load, but the PlayBase Extra Large has the most room to use it: 4.9m wide, 8 carabiner points and 4 swing spots. That means a family can have swings for the younger children and a pull-up bar or boxing bag for the teenagers on the same frame.
