Which PlayBase Fits Your Garden?

Written by Gary McGeown, founder of Trampolines Ireland · Checked October 2026

Irish gardens come in every shape, from narrow terrace strips to big rural lawns. This guide goes through the common garden shapes and suggests which BERG PlayBase frame to look at for each, with a starter build and price.

One rule first: always measure your own clear space. Gardens differ even on the same road, so treat the suggestions below as a starting point. A frame suits your garden only if the clear space is at least the figure needed. The garden check in our configurator will tell you which frames fit.

How to measure your clear space

    BERG PlayBase frame dimensions diagram
    1. Pick the flattest area of lawn, away from beds, paths and sheds.
    2. With a tape measure, mark out a rectangle and note its width and depth in metres.
    3. Leave out anything in the way: washing lines, trees, bins, garden furniture and fences.
    4. For the Wall frame, measure the space in front of the solid wall you plan to use.
    5. Enter your width and depth in the configurator's garden check.

    Clear space needed: Wall 4m × 3m in front of a solid wall, Medium 6m × 4m, Large 7m × 5m, Extra Large 8.5m × 6m.

    Narrow terrace or townhouse garden

BERG PlayBase Wall fixed to the wall of a house in a narrow garden

Long, narrow gardens often have the house wall or a garage wall as the most useful surface. The PlayBase Wall fixes to a solid wall, such as the wall of your house or garage, so it uses the width you have rather than needing room on all sides.

Frame to look at: PlayBase Wall, if you have at least 4m × 3m in front of a solid wall of clear space.

    Starter build: PlayBase Wall (€999) + 2 swing seats (€39 each) = €1,077

Watch for: The Wall is not designed for fences or timber panels. Keep the 4m × 3m clear of bins, side passages and back doors that open outwards. If your garden is wide enough for 6m × 4m of clear space, the Medium becomes an option too.

    Semi-detached or housing estate garden

BERG PlayBase Medium free-standing climbing frame

Many estate gardens are a rectangle of lawn with a shed and a washing line. If you can find 6m × 4m of clear, flat space, the free-standing Medium gives you two swings plus the option of the slide, net or soccer goal. With 7m × 5m, look at the Large.

Frame to look at: PlayBase Medium (or Large if space allows), if you have at least 6m × 4m (Large 7m × 5m) of clear space.

    Starter build: PlayBase Medium TL (€1,499) + swing seat (€39) + nest swing (€129) = €1,667

Watch for: Rotary washing lines and sheds are the usual problem: measure from them, not from the fence. Think about neighbours' windows that overlook the garden, and put the frame where swings move away from paths.

    Wide or corner garden

BERG PlayBase Large climbing frame with six carabiner points

Corner and wide gardens often have more width than depth. The Large is our most popular frame: three swings at once, and the only frame that takes the hammock. It needs 7m × 5m of clear space.

Frame to look at: PlayBase Large, if you have at least 7m × 5m of clear space.

    Starter build: PlayBase Large TL (€1,749) + 2 swing seats (€39 each) + Platform + Slide (€399) = €2,226

Watch for: Corner plots can be oddly shaped, so measure a true rectangle, not the longest diagonal. Watch for sloping ground towards the boundary and for hedges that will grow into the swing space.

    Large rural garden

BERG PlayBase Extra Large climbing frame with eight carabiner points

If you have a big lawn, the Extra Large gives four swings at once and eight carabiner points, enough for a whole family or regular visiting cousins. It needs 8.5m × 6m of clear space.

Frame to look at: PlayBase Extra Large, if you have at least 8.5m × 6m of clear space.

    Starter build: PlayBase Extra Large (€1,999) + 2 swing seats (€39 each) + nest swing (€129) + Platform + Slide (€399) = €2,605

Watch for: Rural gardens are often less level than they look and can be exposed. Choose the flattest spot, check for soft or wet ground, and keep the frame where you can see it from the house.

    Courtyards and patios

A paved courtyard usually rules out the ground anchors used by the free-standing frames, but a solid house or garage wall can carry the PlayBase Wall. It takes swings, the climbing wall, basketball hoop and fitness kit.

Frame to look at: PlayBase Wall, if you have at least 4m × 3m in front of a solid wall of clear space.

    Starter build: PlayBase Wall (€999) + swing seat (€39) + basketball hoop (€199) = €1,237

Watch for: Hard surfaces under swings need thought. Check the fitting instructions, or call us on 01 960 1641 if you are unsure about your wall or surface.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Which PlayBase fits my garden?

Measure your clear, flat space. Wall needs 4m × 3m in front of a solid wall, Medium 6m × 4m, Large 7m × 5m and Extra Large 8.5m × 6m. Choose the largest frame that fits. The garden check in our configurator does this for you.

Can I go by my house type?

Only as a starting point. Gardens vary a lot even on the same estate, so always measure your own clear space before choosing a frame.

    What counts as clear space?

A flat area with nothing in it: no sheds, washing lines, beds, paths, trees or fences. The figure includes the room swings need to move safely.

    Do I need concrete?

No. The Medium, Large and Extra Large are held by ground anchors with no concrete. The Wall frame fixes to a solid wall, such as the wall of your house or garage.

What if my garden is between two sizes?

Go for the smaller frame that fully fits the clear space. The configurator still lets you choose a larger frame but shows a warning so you can measure again.
