Garden Climbing Frames for Irish Gardens

Written by Gary McGeown, founder of Trampolines Ireland · Checked October 2026

Irish gardens are rarely big, flat and dry. This guide helps you work out whether a climbing frame will fit yours, where to put it, and how it will cope with the weather.

    Step 1: measure your garden

Take a tape measure outside and measure the clear lawn you could give up, not the whole garden. Leave out flower beds, paths, sheds, trees and the washing line.

Measure width (along the frame) and depth (the direction children swing). The frame itself is only 1m deep, but swings need room to move, so the clear space is much bigger than the frame. You can enter your measurements in our PlayBase configurator to see which frames fit.

Step 2: compare the clear space

All frames are 2.45m high and 1m deep. See each one: Wall, Medium, Large, Extra Large.

Small or narrow garden? Use a wall

Many Irish homes have a narrow back garden with a house or garage wall on one side. The PlayBase Wall fixes to that wall instead of standing on the lawn. It is 2.4m wide, costs €999 and needs 4m × 3m clear in front.

The PlayBase Wall fixes to a solid wall, such as the wall of your house or garage. It is not designed for fences or timber panels. Check the fitting instructions, or call us on 01 960 1641 if you are unsure about your wall. More ideas in climbing frames for small gardens.

    Slopes and soft ground

A climbing frame should stand on level ground. Choose the flattest spot you have, and keep it away from the bottom of a slope where water collects.

The free-standing frames are held by ground anchors, so they go straight into the lawn. Soft, wet ground in winter is normal in Ireland; if your garden is very waterlogged or uneven, call us on 01 960 1641 before you order and we will talk it through.

    Wind and rain

Wooden frames in Irish gardens need treating, and rot is the usual reason they come down. The PlayBase is galvanised, powder-coated steel. There is no timber to rot and no annual treatment.

The frame carries a 10-year warranty, 13 years when registered with BERG. Fabric accessories such as swings and the hammock unclip in seconds, so you can bring them in over winter. See our year-round care guide and why families pick metal climbing frames.

    Lawn care around the frame

Grass under the swings wears first, as with any swing set. Keep the clear space free of toys and garden furniture so you can mow around it easily.

Because the frame is only 1m deep and has no tower or deck, there is very little lawn hidden underneath it. Accessories unhook, so you can move swings out of the way on mowing day.

How it looks in the garden

The PlayBase is a slim steel frame in black or green, with no roof, tower or plastic panels. Green blends into hedges and lawn; black suits modern gardens and patios. When the children are older it works as a garden gym, so it doesn't look out of place for years. See PlayBase vs wooden climbing frames for a side-by-side comparison.

    Installation without concrete

There is no concrete to mix and no waiting for it to set. The free-standing frames are held by ground anchors; the Wall frame fixes to the wall.

Step-by-step detail is on our installation page. Every frame takes a maximum load of 400kg.

    Adding to it over time

Start with the frame and a swing seat, then add a slide, climbing wall, climbing net or basketball hoop later. Prices are on the accessories page, and our swing sets guide covers how many swings each frame takes: Wall 1–2, Medium 2, Large 3, Extra Large 4. For help choosing, read the buying guide.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do I need for a climbing frame?

    Clear space needed: PlayBase Wall 4m × 3m in front of the wall, Medium 6m × 4m, Large 7m × 5m, Extra Large 8.5m × 6m. The frames themselves are 2.4m, 2.85m, 3.8m and 4.9m wide, all 1m deep and 2.45m high.

    Does a PlayBase need concrete?

No. The free-standing Medium, Large and Extra Large are held by ground anchors, with no concrete. The Wall frame fixes to a solid wall instead.

    Will it survive Irish weather?

The frame is galvanised, powder-coated steel, so there is no timber to rot and no annual treatment. It carries a 10-year frame warranty, or 13 years when registered with BERG.

Can a climbing frame go on a slope?

The frame needs level ground to stand true and keep the clear space safe. Pick the flattest part of the garden. If you are unsure about your ground, call us on 01 960 1641 before ordering.

Can I put a climbing frame against a wall?

Yes, with the PlayBase Wall. It fixes to a solid wall, such as the wall of your house or garage, and needs 4m × 3m clear in front. It is not designed for fences or timber panels. Check the fitting instructions, or call us on 01 960 1641 if you are unsure about your wall.
